Baildon Match Report

Baildon Match Report

Jim West24 Oct 2021 - 12:15

Pack Ensures Return To Winning Ways.

After four successive defeats Wath were able to welcome back several key, experienced players. The forwards were particularly strengthened by the return of props Tony Kenney and Sam Levitt, second row Luke Stead and veteran back row , Joe Earp. With another veteran, Joe Bartlett, back at scrum half, some improvement on recent form was expected.
The forwards did not disappoint as they drove forward from the first scrum and following several powerful drives Luke Stead forced his way over the Baildon line after 5 minutes. Jack Whitlam’s accurate conversion the score 7-0.
The home team continued to dominate possession but failed to add to their score as Baildon finally entered Wath territory. Without looking threatening to the Wath line the away team had two penalty opportunities to get into the game. Fortunately for Wath, penalty attempts on 15 and 20 minutes both narrowly missed.
Wath recovered their control and following a scrum close to their opponents line several close range were repelled but not to be denied, a superb long pass from Jack Whitlam put in Rory Anderson wide out on the wing. Whitlam’s excellent kick gave the home team a 14-0 lead as the half time whistle blew.
The pattern of the game continued into the second have as the Wath forwards still dominated but the brave, well organised Baildon defence remained stubbornly difficult to break down.
The home team extended their lead to 21-0 on 55 minutes with a pushover try by Joe Earp and another superb conversion by Whitlam. Baildon stuck to their task and a converted try on 70 minutes reduced the arrears to 21-7 and reminded Wath that a victory wasn’t sealed.
The win was confirmed on 75 minutes when tireless forward, Curtiss Brownrigg burst through from a line out to score Wath’s bonus point ,fourth try. Yet another difficult conversion was nailed by Jack Whitlam to make the score 28-7. The resilient visitors had the last say as they scored another converted on 80 minutes to make the final score 28-14.
Wath’s win was based on the power and determination of the Wath pack but they will receive sterner tests in the coming weeks.
