Things are looking bright for the future of Wath Upon Dearne RUFC. Having finished last season with an impressive 13 wins out of 14 games losing only by 2 points to high league finishers Bramley Phoenix and Wath are looking to continue on with this success into the new season. With the coaching team of Lee Bird,Craig Sanderson, Tony Price, Ian Evans and Dave Battersby, Wath has a level of strength in depth never before seen at the club. With a successful Colts side making up the majority of the development XV who won promotion to Merit League 3 last season and continuing to play Colts rugby on Sundays in Yorkshire Colts League B the future at the club looks bright. Added to this is the commitment to the club of second row Richard Hill who joined the club in February from Hull Ionians and who’s experience at national league level proved pivotal in the 1st XV’s run of success last season. Furthermore Wath has signed former Wakefield and England Under 21 prop Dean Hardcastle who also coaches the Under 13’s at the club, and Number 8 Matthew Burrows returns to the club after playing last season for National Side Cleckheaton. Furthermore Wath has secured the signing of back row Joe Eayrp who has experience with Rotherham Titans A after being at Wath as a junior. Also Wath has gained the signing of half back Joe Bartlet who played at the club as a youngster and in recent years has played rugby with Halifax and Hull Ionians. This years Colt’s captain and former Yorkshire Under 18 scrum half Josh Bird will sit behind a pack lead once again by captain Simon Lines that has a wealth of experience and Wath can now boast a back line full of young explosive talent. The club is also able to boast players who have come through the junior section at Wath to gain county representative honours; Steve Mason with Yorkshire and Steve Wesson with the North of England. Having fielded 3 teams week in week out last season the club is hoping to add to this a fourth team as often as possible which is an incredible achievement for the club.
