The Wath forwards started the game well, controlling the ball in their opponent’s half but the home crowd was stunned when the Hullensians’ backs got the ball and created space for their right winger to evade a couple of tackles and score a try, near the touchline. An excellent conversion put the visitors 0-7 ahead after 10 minutes.
The Hullensians kicker was on target again on 15 minutes to add a penalty to increase his sides lead to 0-10.
Wath spent a long period in their opponents 22 and spurned a couple of opportunities to kick penalties, preferring look for a try. This tactic proved successful as following several phases the ball was fed to hooker, James Thompson with plenty of time to cross for a Wath try. A successful conversion from wide by stand - off, Jack Whitlam closed the score to 7-10, after 25 minutes.
A long, range penalty to Hullensians, following a high tackle by Wath, sailed between the posts and after 30 minutes the visitors went 7-13 in front. With 5 minutes to half time Hullensians backs struck again, with a move not dissimilar to their opening try. Wath will be disappointed with their defence as they allowed the winger to score again. Another confident kick made the score 7-20 at the break.
Wath totally dominated the third quarter of the match which was played almost entirely in Hullensians half. A powerful Wath scrum 5 metres out splintered their opponents and No.8, was able to pick up and score. Whitlam closed the score to 14-20, with just 5 minutes of second half gone. With more sustained pressure Wath were awarded a penalty 5 metres out and second row, Luke Stead went on his own and bulldozed over the try line. Whitlam put Wath in front 21-20, as the game went into the last 20 minutes.
Attacking again, a Wath error gave Hullensians a turnover. Identifying a numerical advantage on the blind side, slick handling by their backs enabled them to score a try on the counter - attack. Hullensians regained the lead 21-27 with 10 minutes left.
A fourth converted Hullensians try almost immediately appeared to seal the game for the side from Hull as the moved two scores ahead 21-34 with just 8 minutes to go.
The spirited Wath team showed great spirit and doggedness as they refused to concede the game. As the forwards went close to their opponents line they produced quick ball for replacement scrum half, Joe Bartlett to fire a superb, long miss pass to Prop Brandon Coult, lurking on the wing, to score. Another excellent touch line conversion by Whitlam put his side in with a chance going into injury time, as the score stood at 28-34.
Despite their valiant efforts, and much to the relief of their opposition, Wath ran out of time and had to make do with 2 bonus points. One for scoring 4 tries and fa second for finishing within 7 points of their conquerers.
Wath players, coaches and supporters will all be disappointed as they did fight their way back into the game but several errors in defence allowed Hullensians backs to make the difference.
