Success To Mark Halfway Point Of Season

With a 5 win and 5 loses following promotion to Yorkshire 1, Wath hosted Loediensians in the game marking the half - way point of the season, intent on making it 6 wins. With a positive start Wath kept possession between forwards and backs until prop Sam Levitt crashed over for a try after 5 minutes. The great start was continued with a fine conversion by stand-off, Jack Whitlam to give Wath a 7-0 lead.
Both teams defended well and it took until the 20th minute for Wath, through Whitlam , to add a penalty to their score and improve the lead to 10 – 0. The home side were able to extend their advantage to 17 – 0 when scrum pressure near the Leos line resulted in the referee awarding a penalty try on 25 minutes.

The Wath defence was made to work hard against their lively opponents, especially their backs. Wath finally conceded a try under the posts following a charged down clearance. After 35 minutes the home sides lead was cut to 17-7 after 35 minutes.

On half time Wath were able to reimpose the dominance as the sleight of hand from scrum half, Joe Bartlet, paved the way for skipper, Sean Hopper to cross for a try, unopposed. Another successful conversion by Whitlam made the score 24-7 after 40 minutes.

Following an even start to the second half Wath were reduced to 14 men on 55 minutes as winger Matthew Jenkins was deemed to have committed a professional foul. Leos cleverly took advantage of the extra man, and an excellent cross kick gave their winger space to score a try in the corner. The score moved to 24-12, as the conversion was missed.

The return of Jenkins on 65 minutes had an immediate effect as he was given the ball early and with pace and power was able to beat three men to score a superb try. Another excellent conversion by Whitlam put Wath 31-12. As the game ebbed and flowed with both defences on top Leos eventually caught the Wath side napping. Taking a quick tap penalty they were able to outnumber their opponents and maul the ball over the line to score their third try. A missed conversion made the score 31-17 with 5 minutes to go. There was no further score before the referee blew for full time.

Wath achieved their aim with a bonus point win. To be in 6th place at mid-season, following promotion deserves recognition for Head Coach, Carl Mortimer and his assistant Alan Yuill. The arrival of some new players to the team and the introduction of several outstanding youngsters is helping to create successful transition throughout the whole club.

Man of Steel for his tireless enthusiasm, skill and endurance was awarded to Joe Bartlett.
